Two- Day In-salon Traning
Recently, I had the honor of leading a two-day in-salon training at the Paul Mitchell School in NYC, where we explored key techniques to help stylists elevate their craft.
This training wasn’t just about technical skills but about understanding hairstyling as an art form—tailoring each look to a client's unique face shape, personality, and fashion sense. Together, we mastered the art of backcombing for volume, face-framing with precision, and creating styles that enhance each client’s natural beauty.
Hairstyling that goes beyond trends and techniques
It’s about understanding the client on a deeper level, knowing where they live in the realms of the rational mind, heart, and gut...
By focusing on these elements, along with face shape and balance, we learned how to create the illusion of an oval face, which brings harmony and proportion to any look. Standing the client up to assess these factors ensures the hairstyle fits not just their face but their body as well.
3 Wheels of Fashion
One of the key concepts we explored was the 3 Wheels of Fashion—Personality, Fashion, and Femininity. These principles allow hairstylists to design styles that reflect the client's lifestyle, whether it be traditional, edgy, or bohemian.
We also discussed how hairstyling can express femininity, sensuality, or androgyny, making it a powerful form of personal expression.
Throughout the workshop, we worked on structured cuts and razor techniques, including a concave layered haircut and a French bob with soft layers and curtain fringe, designed to suit each client’s face and body type.
These advanced methods, like using extreme over-direction to create outlines and internal layers simultaneously, are what transform a stylist into a five-star artist.
